Become a Weather Watcher

Is the sky sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy today? Weather watching helps children practise observation, use descriptive words, compare changes, and ask questions about the natural world. In Day 71 of the Solvera369 learning series, children become weather watchers by observing conditions from a safe place, drawing what they see, and recording how the weather changes.

This activity does not require special equipment. A window, a sheltered view of the sky, and the printable worksheet are enough to get started. Children can repeat the observation later in the day or on several days to compare their findings.

What Can You Observe?

  • Sky conditions. Notice whether the sky looks sunny, cloudy, partly cloudy, rainy, or foggy.
  • Air and comfort. Describe whether the air feels warm, cool, cold, humid, or breezy from a safe location.
  • Changes over time. Check again later. Clouds may move, the sun may appear, or rain may begin or stop.
  • Evidence and questions. Ask which clues support your description and what you would like to find out next.

How to Complete the Day 71 Activity

  1. Choose a safe viewing spot. Observe from indoors, a window, or a sheltered area with adult permission.
  2. Look carefully. Notice the sky, clouds, precipitation, and how the air feels.
  3. Record your observations. Tick the matching boxes on the worksheet and draw the weather.
  4. Make a prediction. Guess what the weather may be like later and explain the clues behind your guess.
  5. Observe again. Repeat the activity later or tomorrow and identify what changed and what stayed the same.
  6. Share one discovery. Tell a family member, teacher, or classmate something you learned.

Use the Free Day 71 Worksheet

The printable worksheet includes a weather checklist, a drawing space, weather-detective questions, a comparison section, and a safety reminder. Younger children can draw and dictate their answers; older children can write observations in complete sentences.

Weather Safety Comes First

  • Never go outside to observe during thunder or lightning; move indoors and follow adult instructions.
  • Stay away from floodwater, storm drains, fallen branches, and downed power lines.
  • Do not use the activity to make safety decisions. Follow local official weather alerts and guidance.
  • Ask a trusted adult before going outdoors in extreme heat, cold, heavy rain, or strong winds.

Questions for Young Scientists

  • What clues tell you whether the sky is cloudy or sunny?
  • Did the weather change between your first and second observations?
  • What was your prediction, and what actually happened?
  • What would you like to observe over the next few days?

Build a Weather Journal

Repeat the activity for a few days and keep the worksheets together as a simple weather journal. Children can compare their drawings, notice patterns, practise recording information, and learn that a prediction is an informed guess—not a guarantee. Try the Day 71 Weather Watchers Challenge and keep exploring the world one observation at a time.
